Nimonic® 81 Hot working
NIMONIC alloy 81 can be hot worked at temperature ranges of 950-1160°C (1742-2120°F).
Nimonic® 81 Forging
NIMONIC alloy 81 can be hot forged at temperatures in the range of 1010-1176°C (1850-2150°F).
Cold working may be done on the alloy for hardening.
Nimonic® 81 Annealing
NIMONIC alloy 81 should be solution annealed at 1098°C (2010°F) for about 8 hours.
Nimonic® 81 Applications
The NIMONIC alloy 81 is used in the following applications:
- Heat exchange plant.
- Gas turbine engineering
- Piston engine exhaust valves
At Tubewell , you will find Nimonic 81 as a precipitation-hardenable nickel-chromium alloy with improved resistance to high-temperature corrosion. The hot-corrosion resistance property of the alloy is due to its high chromium content of 30%. It has very good tensile and rupture strength and first-class creep resistance at high-temperatures. In gas turbines, piston-engine exhaust valves, and furnace equipment subject there are deposits resulting from combustion of impure fuels containing alkali, metal, sulphates and chlorides. In such scenario this alloy works best.
Nimonic alloy 81 material chemical composition includes 63% nickel max, <=30% Chromium, <=2% Cobalt max, Titanium 1.8%, <= 1.0% Iron , 0.9% Aluminium. Mechanical Properties as Density of 8.06 gm/cm3,
Tensile strength(annealed) 1050 MPa, Yield strength(annealed) 600 Mpa and Elongation at Break 40%.
The conventional machining methods used on iron alloys can be used to work-harden during machining and it improves strengthening. Nimonic alloy 81 can be welded using common techniques such as using a matching filler metal. The metal should be solution treated before the welding process . Fusion welding done by tungsten inert gas welding is suitable for this alloy. Apart from these it includes other welding techniques such as dip-transfer welding in thickness of 5 mm or lower, resistance-spot, -stitch, and -seam welding and flash-butt welding.
Nimonic alloy 81 is commonly used in the following areas:
- Gas turbine engineering
- Piston engine exhaust valves
- Heat exchange plant.
